Residential Treatment Program

Celebrating 55 Years of Service 1967 - 2022

A Commitment to Recovery. A Commitment to Quality.

What to expect in Residential Treatment

Our main program is composed of educational sessions, discussion groups and peer support groups. In addition, residents  participate in in-house AA, NA and CA meetings. We also recognize other support groups, including Men for Sobriety.

Residents will also have a number of individual sessions with their assigned Addictions Counselor, with a focus on setting healthy, achievable recovery goals. These sessions, along with all of our programming, are client-centered, trauma-informed and evidence-based.

While sometimes demanding, group living is an educational and rewarding experience. For example, keeping the house clean, ordered and welcoming is a crucial part of successful group life. To that end, participation in household chores is mandatory. Both private and communal areas of the house are everyone's responsibility. Staff and program graduates teach new residents how to cook nutritious and cost-effective meals. These activities allow clients to build transferable life-skills that will increase their chances of success outside Wayside.

We hold a weekly structured social night as well as a weekly movie night. This aspect of Wayside House emphasizes that there can be enjoyment in the recovery process and demonstrates a healthy balance. Recovery takes considerable work, but recreation and leisure are a key part of successful sobriety.

Our Residential Treatment Program has four main components:

Orientation Phase

• Introduction to the house, including staff and peers, comes after a mandatory, 24-hour COVID-19 isolation

• Within the first 3 days in the program you are assigned a primary counsellor. Your initial session will include goal discussion and development of a personalized treatment plan

• Transition planning begins as early as possible to ensure a smooth re-entry back to your home life

Continuing Care Program

All Wayside House of Hamilton residents are welcome to participate in our Forever Aftercare Continuing Care program.

We hold virtual aftercare appointments twice a week, during which clients discuss the course of their recovery and offer support to their peers. Wayside recognizes that life outside the house can be stressful and unpredictable, so we strive to make our Continuing Care program as accessible and relevant to our alumni as possible.
